Unwound - Fake Train

Kill Rock Stars [1993]

The post-hardcore train does not seem to have any brakes. I have scoured the thing myself and there is no stopping mechanism to be found. Also, the whole train smells like urine... Fuck...
Good thing the tunes are still fantastic. Right now we are listening to Unwound's debut release (though they wrote an album before this, it did not get released till 1995). You already know this, but for all the bro's reading this who ended up here from a stumble upon sesh', Unwound were a cult post-punk troupe active throughout the 90's. All the elements are there, even in early work such as this. Melodic hardcore, jagged noise rock, and ambient post-rock moments are all present. It's like someone let Born Against, Fugazi, and Sonic Youth loose in a tiny room and said "play". It's not only the juxtaposition of extreme musical elements that is inspiring, either. It is the thoughtful layering of these elements right-the-fuck on top of one another. Screeching feedback over a delightful melody. It's noise pop. It's amazing.
